Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PDF file?

A PDF file is a special file format intended to be used in the transfer of documents within in the world wide web. The PDF (portable document format) as its name suggests is a portable format. It is unique because it can be created to contain hundreds of pages and yet manage to be light and easy to download.

A typical novel can be compressed into a 500 kilobyte PDF file which on a home computer will take approximately 2-3 minutes to download.

The advantages to this format are often seen in publishing. Entire magazines or newspapers can be downloaded anywhere in the world in a single file and then viewed at leisure. Libraries have also begun using the PDF format to archive volumes of text so that they can be read digitally - i.e. via computer or handheld devices like PDAs

The PDF file is also platform independent which means that it can be read on a PC, Macintosh and even on a Palm handheld. It is also operating system independent. So you can read a PDF file on Windows, Macintosh OS X, Unix, Linux or any other flavour of operating systems as long as there is a PDF reader developed for that operating system.

What version of Adobe Acrobat Reader do I require to read The FootHills Paper?

You will require version 5 and above to read The Foothills Paper.

Where can I get Adobe Acrobat Reader? Is it free or do I have to buy it?

Adobe Acrobat Reader is FREE. It has to be downloaded from the Adobe site here.

If downloading is a problem, some computer magazines may also provide Adobe Reader along with their CD-ROMs.

What kind of computer do I require to read The FootHills Paper online?

The Foothills Paper can be read on any computer as long as it is equipped with a PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat Reader. The computer must have access to the Internet to visit thefoothillspaper.com and download the issue.

What is the difference between viewing the PDF file on my Internet browser and viewing it in Adobe Acrobat reader?

To view a PDF file, you must install a PDF reader like the one provided by Adobe. Upon installation, a small plugin is installed for your brand of Internet browser which also enables it to display PDFs within its window.

    • Browser: When you view a PDF on your browser, it is 'streamed' to your computer from the Internet.

Click on a PDF link to open it directly on your browser
    • Acrobat: To view a PDF in an external reader, you must physically download the PDF file to your desktop (or hard drive). This can be done by:

Right clicking the link >> Save target as >> Save in: 'Desktop'
    • After the download is complete, open the PDF file by double clicking it or by opening it from within the external reader.

Help! I cannot see some pages of the PDF. Is that a problem with my computer?

Sometimes, due to the imperfect nature of Internet, a data stream stops while in the process of download. This usually happens with larger files and is frequent with slower Internet connections.

When you try to view a PDF from within the Internet browser, you may find only a few pages arriving at your computer and the others blank, like 3 pages out of 10 pages.

This is because the PDF is being streamed to your computer and maybe this data stream has stopped. You can solve this problem by:

    1. refreshing the browser window and hence re-starting the streaming process or,
    2. downloading the pdf file to your desktop and then viewing it in Acrobat Reader.

The second method is safer and allows you to view the PDF at leisure and even keep it for future reference.

PDF files are supposed to be smaller to download. Why is The FootHills Paper PDF so large?

Yes. PDF files are smaller to download. Unfortunately, the pictures used within the document also add size to the file size. If The FootHills Paper was only made up of text then the PDF file size would have been manageable.

It is important to note that what you are downloading is a compressed version of an 400 - 700 MB document. So considering that the original is that huge, the resized file size of 5-7 MB is pretty negligible.

Why do the pictures look fuzzy and pixelated in the PDF file?

Due to the extensive compression process used in reducing the file size, the pictures sometimes lose their sharpness and look smudgy or pixelated. But this is important to make the PDF file faster to download.

If the picture were to be sharper, the file size would increase dramatically. It is really an optimum balance considering the slow pace of Internet speeds.
